Of June and October
Well, friends, I have officially been blogging for a year now. That in and of itself is shocking as well as delightful.
As I've mentioned in other posts, it's been a year full of changes, of ups and downs, and of discovering more new things about myself as well as growing as a person. Really, what year isn't?
As it has been a year since I started my blog, never expecting to get this far or take it this seriously, I've found plenty of things that are and are not working for me. A big one, for me, was the name. While it suited my purposes for the past year, there were a lot of flaws with it that I found in practice and in personal opinion. It was something I just sort of came up with one day, as I started a blog, as so many other projects, on a spur of the moment whim. Unfortunately, you can't get very far into that process without a name, so I gave it about 30 minutes of solid (ish) thought and finally popped out something that wasn't either completely revolting or already taken. I was never in love with it. I never connected with the name. And it caused several problems and miscommunications along the way.
But anyways. I've had a whole year to learn about what I do and don't like, to observe other blogs' aesthetics and decide which things I appreciate as well as hone my design and coding skills. I've been thinking about names since, well, July probably. Although, ironically, the one I chose didn't come to me until about two weeks ago. This was after I'd already settled "permanently" on two others before that.
So without further ado, here's the unveiling:
So you might be wondering, "October June, what the frick frack does that mean?"
Allow me to explain:
At the simplest level, the name comes from my two favorite months of the year - October and June, respectively.
I also like that it sounds like it could be the name of a southern debutante or an indie movie or the sophomore album of a folk band.
But the reasons that June and October are my favorite months are what really holds the key to why I chose the name, in my opinion.
October is the beginning of the end for the year. It's when things start to fade away, when the trees and the plant life go out in a blaze of glory. It's the start of sweater weather, of cozying up inside with mugs of tea and good books. It's closing the chapter of summer, when people finally accept that the chilly weather is here to stay, and they put away their flip flops and sundresses until next year. It smells of finality and pumpkin pie, and marks the beginning of a holiday season most often filled with friends, family, and other loved ones. The month of October is very often marked by steely grey skies and rain clouds, interrupted every once in a while by startlingly blue moments of clarity.
June reminds me first and foremost of sunshine. It's happy, carefree, and adventurous. It's a good day, a road trip with friends, barbecues in the backyard, and running barefoot through sprinklers and ocean tides. June is the definite start to summer, when the kids get out of school, when the weather starts heating up - it's innocent and freeing. It's happy. It tastes like watermelon candy and fireworks by the beach and freckled, sunkissed shoulders. It's a new start, just as much as January is, in my opinion.
But I've waxed poetic for long enough. In short, everyone has October days and June days. Some days are heavy and over-cast, some days are blissful and sunny.
October is a happy goodbye.
June is a new beginning.
But June or October, neither is better than the other. There are good and bad in both, of course. Just because October is cloudy and grey doesn't mean I don't enjoy it. Just because June is sunny and warm doesn't mean the air conditioner doesn't break sometimes. You have to take life as it comes.
This is my new personal philosophy, to start with. But it also pertains even more heavily to my blog and my predicament as it stands right now. It's the end of an era - I'm shutting the door on 2013, and the problems and trials it brought with it. I'm packing up the good things of this October year- the hard-won lessons, the late night talks, and my new favorite lipstick - and heading off for June with my head held high.
Have I bored you to death with philosophy yet, darlings?
I tend to be a bit long winded, but bear with me. The best is yet to come. I hope you like the new site, the new design, and the new name. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the subject! I want to thank you for sticking around this past year, and I can't wait to show you what I have in store for this upcoming one.
I'd also like to give a huge, huge, huge shout out to Ellie from the XO Misse design blog - I literally could not have done this without her. Her site has tons and tons of awesome tutorials about coding and design that even a relative expert such as myself could work out. And on top of that, she will help you out with any design issues you're having if you just ask. She's a saint, I tell you! I was having some serious problems getting mine to work out the second time around (the dropdown menu was the big problem) and she literally went in and looked at my code and fixed it for me. I love this girl!
She also has a fashion and beauty blog called Misseblog which is adorable! Everyone needs to go check out both her blogs.
