How I Tripled My Email List Subscribers in One Day

If you've been around the blogosphere recently, you've likely seen the manifestos regarding list building and the importance of having an engaged and involved email subscriber list. Like you, I was equally confused and confounded by the whole email list shebang mere months ago - what do you send them? And how often? What's the point? I didn't really understand the best practices for building and maintaining a thriving email list. But once I cracked the code, it was like a no-brainer.

The first email I sent out to my list was an un-inspirational list of the posts I'd published that past month, along with a few not-so-subtle hints to visit my Etsy shop. It was, on the whole, a flop, and widely ignored by the small number of people that had already subscribed to my list. I continued in that vein for a couple of months, and then gave up for a while.

But then I was reading about content upgrades and lead magnets, and I decided to finally try my hand at creating one - so I made a fancy Instagram branding workbook and a landing page, which later turned into my free resource library.

For those who don't know, a lead magnet is a content upgrade (like a workbook, ebook, webinar, etc) that you offer people for free in exchange for them signing up for your email list.

Naturally, being proud of myself, I posted about it on social media and shared it with my followers. I never expected to nearly triple my subscribers in less than 24 hours.

In one day, I managed to all but triple my list subscribers. In the month of November, I increased my sign up rate by 500%. All from one lead magnet. ONE.

So how did I do it?

It might seem like my success was a stroke of luck, or a right-place-right-time scenario, but in reality, it was the result of a lot of planning and hard work. I implemented strategies that anyone (like you!) can use to dramatically increase their engaged email subscribers. And the best part? I'm about to share it with you right now.

Find your top posts + create content upgrades

The first thing I did was go to Google Analytics and figure out what my popular posts were that I could create something extra for. You can do that by logging into the Google Analytics dashboard, then in the side panel, going to Behavior > Site Content > All Pages. This will show you your most visited blog posts and pages, and give you a great jumping off point.

I saw that my post from August titled "How to Be an Instagram It Girl" was still doing well, and I began brainstorming what kind of content upgrade I could create that would add value and make people want to subscribe.

I decided on a workbook designed to help you identify your ideal Instagram aesthetic and start building your brand. I created it in Apple Pages and then uploaded it as a PDF to my Mailchimp and my blog resource page.

Make a landing page for the content upgrade

It's a good idea to create a separate landing page on your blog to tell people why they should give you their email address in exchange for your kickass content upgrade. I mean, giving someone your email address is a pretty personal thing - that's inviting this person into your inbox whenever they please. You're going to have to sell me on the assets of this thing.

When I first made this workbook, I made a landing page specifically for the Instagram content, basically listing out what they'll learn and how it will help people build their brand.

As I continued to create content upgrades and increase my followers, I decided it would be easier on everyone to create one big page with all my workbooks and videos and whatnot that people would get access to when they subscribed. That way, they could see all the cool stuff in one place and never have to go hunting through their inbox looking for that one eBook they wanted to download 2 months ago.

Create a pinnable image

Pinterest is THE shiz, y'all. It's my biggest traffic referral by a long shot, and I know several big name bloggers who say the same. So, once you create this massively awesome content upgrade that is a must-download, design an equally fabulous Pinterest friendly (read: vertical) image touting your product and pin the heck out of it. I used it to direct people to the landing page which encouraged them to sign up for access to this rad thing that I made.

Make it easy for people to subscribe

Previously, I had one lowly sign up form on my site, tucked into the sidebar with the headline "Newsletter" and not much else. It was a step in the right direction, but it wasn't enough. For one thing, no one is going to subscribe to something that just says "Newsletter" - you have to tell people what's in it for them! Like we talked about previously, people don't just hand out their email addresses willy-nilly. They want to know what they're getting and whether it will be worth it.

Furthermore, you'll probably need more than one tiny sign up form to catch people's eyes. Now, I have one in my header that tells people why they should sign up, another very bare-bones one in my footer, and several others sprinkled throughout my pages and posts where it makes sense to put them.

Sharing is caring

Once you've taken all these steps and created this incredible content, you can't just publish it to your blog and expect people to come out of the woodwork to find it. You need to share it like you would any other blog post! The Pinterest thing is a great place to start, but also shout it out on Twitter and Facebook. One thing that really got me a lot of traffic was to share it in a few blogger-specific Facebook groups, because it was like a ready-made crowd of people who were my ideal audience for this content. Putting it all together

What seemed like a daunting task, in all actuality, only took me the better part of an evening spent on the couch with Parks and Rec on in the background. I did all this in the span of a couple hours, and the payoff was immediate and bigger than I ever could have expected.
