Q + A Friday: How to Brand Blog Images

Hello and happy Friday, all! My winter break is drawing to a close (sadness) and I'm cooking up ways to stay on top of things once school starts up full swing again. One of the things that you all said you'd really like to see this year is Q+A posts, where readers can submit questions about blogging, branding, or living a creative lifestyle, and I answer them in the form of a blog post.

So, I've decided to do that every Friday this year! In addition to answering one big question in detail in the post, I'm opening up the comments to blogging and branding advice.

Q: How can I brand my blog images so that they're instantly recognizable on Pinterest and other social media?

This is an excellent question, and one that I know a lot of bloggers struggle with often! With Pinterest becoming more and more vital to bloggers and creative entrepreneurs, it's important that your images are not only Pinterest-optimized, but that they reflect your brand and are immediately recognizable! There are several ways you can do this, so we'll dive right in.


One of the easiest ways to brand your blog images is to use the same colors that you use in your site design and branding. As a general rule of thumb for both instances, it's best to only use a few colors, so that people aren't overwhelmed. Between 3-5 is great, and brighter colors are best used as accents. I color code my blog graphics by their categories. Pink is branding, yellow is blogging, orange is social media, etc. That way, my images aren't identical, and there's still some pizazz.


Much like colors, using the same fonts as your blog design is an easy and effective way to brand your images. Again, it's imperative to only use a small handful of fonts, 2 or maybe 3 at the most. That way there is some contrast, but it's not overwhelming or difficult to read.


I use little icons on the top of all of my blog graphics, again depending on the post category. I use a little notepad for branding, a computer for blogging tips, a gear for DIY posts, etc. It's a fun and easy way to create some difference as well as give people a visual idea of what they can expect.

Blog Title + URL

It's incredibly important to include your blog title or URL somewhere on your graphic. I like to write a simplified version of my URL on the bottom of the graphics, that way people can easily see where it's coming from. What better way to create recognizable graphics than to literally tell them who they came from, right?


In my opinion, the simpler a post graphic is, the better. It makes it easier for people to read, especially while they're scrolling through their Pinterest feeds, and it doesn't overwhelm anyone or give them a headache. I like to use a healthy dose of white space on all my graphics so that they text pops out and is more noticeable.

Create a template

The easiest way to ensure your graphics are all the same in terms of colors, fonts, and branding is to create a template on your computer that you can easily edit and crank out new blog graphics. I just saved a PSD file for each post template, and that way I can open it, and all I have to do is edit the post title and save it as a JPG and I'm on my way! It used to take me 30 minutes to an hour to create each graphic because I stubbornly started from scratch (or worse, just made up new designs for each one). But now, it takes me about 5 minutes tops.
